Track Event

Thurs 22 March 2012

Walking into Nidri, saw this footprint in hardened mud.  Dave reckons a badger, what do you think?

A surprise visit from three Greeks this afternoon, just as we’re siesta’ing.  One of them, Nikos, we know, and he speaks good English.  They were here to ask if they could look at our land contract as they have a dispute with the owner of the land at the lower end of our track.  The lower end has been blocked with a fence and mud piles, so the road is completely inaccessible.  Our visitors were very pleased to see our paper from the town hall which confirms that the road is a road as it could take a loaded donkey in 1928 – or something like that.  We gave them photocopies, as they are taking it to court on Monday.

Off to the UK at 4am, driving to Athens.  Wonderful Sue at Newstand is lending us her car, and putting up with the Punto for 9 days.  Further updates from early April.  Constantine may start the shuttering for concrete while we’re away, he says, but then, there’s been no real sense of urgency so far, so I think it’s a bit unlikely much will happen while we’re gone.

I text Constantine and told him we had drawn the outside lines for the foundations, and he text back:  ‘Good.  Can you do the inside ones now?’.  Double eek!  So, two more tins of far-from-eco-friendly spray paint later, and we had this spaceship landing strip good enough for Erich Von Daniken.

Driving to the boatyard, spotted this family of goats and had to take a pic.

Painting Group

Tuesday 20 March 2012

Our little painting group continues.  Huge amount of fun.  We're still meeting in Mamma Mia restaurant, and this is the sort of mess four of us can make in a mere 3 hours!

Back in the yard

Monday 19 March 2012

We’re off to the UK for just over a week, from Thursday 22nd, and Dave is fretting about all the rain and how much is yet to be done in the yard, so I’ve given up writing and painting for the nonce, and am back in the yard, helping out.

A photo I liked.  Industrial chic.  Boat hauling gear in a 'crinkly tin' shed.

Do-It-Yourself Surveying

Sunday 18 March 2012

We told Constantine that the ground had been levelled (apart from a little, as Gerasimos described it, 'anomal' - said in a Greek accent, please), and he sent back a text saying – can you mark the outside edges of the foundations then, please.  Eeek.   A little hungover from the birthday, we got out the tape measure – many thanks, Richie, a great birthday present (especially since you cut the last one in two at 4.7 metres!) and started working it all out.

Finally, a good use for Pythagorus’ Theorem.  You can check two lines cross at right angles by measuring a triangle where the right angle sides measure 3,and 4 metres.  If the hypotenuse is 5 metres, then the sides are at right angles – 3 cheers for Pythagorus!

We were just getting stuck into it, and wondering how to record this significant moment, when Tina and Shrimpy arrived to claim their rotovator that we’re looking after.  Tina took some photos of us at work.
