The Emperor's New Conservatory

17 December 2016

Having waited almost three weeks for the wood delivery to arrive, it finally came on Thursday, and so we organised Yiannis, our original woodworker, to come and build the structural elements of the outside space that will be glassed in to create passive solar heating.

Wooden ringbeam, with three columns to support the crossbeam under the extended rafters.  We will clad the base in stone and lime mortar to match the house

Yiannis fixing the uprights.  We will eventually build between the columns to create a structure that will hold glass panels.  We think we'll make them removable so they can be taken away for storage during the summer.

The finished structure.  Not huge, just enough space for a couple of chairs, but we can use one end as a greenhouse in winter.  It's not quite a conservatory, and not quite anything else, but it is a nice place to sit, even without any glass.  Quite possibly it will be too hot to sit in even in winter, when glassed in, but it will warm the house.

The next day, Dave starts the process of protecting the wood.  The camera went onto an arty setting, creating this fabulous effect!
